What is Tally XML and how does bank import work?

Understand the file structure, voucher mapping and import steps before converting your bank statement PDF.

What is Tally XML?

Tally XML is a structured file format used to move accounting data into TallyPrime and Tally ERP 9. A bank statement converter turns each extracted transaction into a voucher inside the XML envelope that Tally can read.

In simple terms: the converter changes a PDF bank statement into structured accounting entries instead of requiring manual voucher entry.

How bank transactions are mapped

Payment vouchers

Debit or withdrawal transactions are commonly mapped as Payment vouchers after the bank and expense ledgers are selected.

Receipt vouchers

Credit or deposit transactions are commonly mapped as Receipt vouchers with the correct amount and narration.

Contra vouchers

Cash withdrawals, deposits and transfers between cash and bank accounts can be mapped as Contra vouchers.

Ledger names

The bank ledger and suspense ledger should match the names configured in your Tally company for a clean import.

How to import XML into TallyPrime

  1. Open your Tally company and go to Import Data.
  2. Choose Transactions and select the downloaded XML file.
  3. Review the import preview and resolve any ledger-name mismatch.
  4. Confirm the import and verify the bank balance and voucher totals.

Why dates and voucher types matter

Tally imports dates and voucher fields in a strict structure. A good converter normalizes dates, separates debit and credit values, preserves narration and creates the XML hierarchy required by Tally. Always review the preview before importing.
